SAILING MATTERS
by the Rear Commodore, Gregg Dobson

Saturday Dinghy sailing 20 February - By Jeremy Kriek
Saturday sailing was hosted by PYC. The turnout was disappointing when compared to the 8 flying fifteens that participated in the RNYC memorial regatta the previous weekend. Never the less the rest of you missed out on a perfect days sailing. Two Flying 15s were launched as was Steve Hegerstrom's 505. The wind initially seemed very light, but soon settled into a moderate 12-plus knots progressively swinging into the east.
PYC elected to sail a NE ditch course which nearly proved to be a soldiers course with a long beat onto the bank followed by a few tacks at the end to lay E5, bear away onto a tight reach with spinnaker, heading for E4. At E4 bear away onto a run heading for E11 , head up around E11, spinnaker still up onto a beam reach, leap onto the plane , drop spinnaker at M10 , head up onto a beat and repeat the lap. The red Flying 15 sailed by Bob Diamond and Estelle Buys set of as the P flag was dropped, giving them a 1minute advantage on the newer boats. FFoxoFF sailed by Patrick Harris and Jeremy Kriek started 1 minute later with two 505s providing some competition. Our esteemed Rear Commodore, Gregg Dobson, elected to sail a laser, making RNYC proud by finishing 3rd in the first race, in a very competitive fleet of at least 10 Lasers. Fun was had by all who participated, but the rest of the dinghy sailors were missed. Come on people join in the fun, we possibly have the best sailing weather in the world. We have the boats, the race organisation and yacht clubs.

The next Saturday afternoon sailing will be held on 6 March as the HMYC 9-hour at Midmar is being sailed this weekend. If you don't have a sailing dinghy and want to join in on the racing please contact either Jeremy Kriek on 082 440 5320 or Gregg Hurter on 082 654 8089.Wednesday Night Racing
