Memorial Weekend Racing 16/17 Feb Print E-mail
Thursday, 31 January 2008

16th Feb - Dinghy's
17th Feb - Hobies and Keelers

This is a race where we remember our sailing friends who have left us. This event started off as the Rob Allan, Rob Memorial Race. After the loss of the Moquini I took the advice of a sailor friend and requested that instead of many different memorial races we have one race and make it a fun weekend of sailing, which is what our old friends & fellow sailors would have loved.

Gail from RNYC is putting up a board with photographs and memories of sailors who have left us. If you would like to give her any material that she can use, please contact her on 083 549 1940.

Weather permitting Braai packs will be on sale. Please bring your friends & families along & join us.

For more information please contact Gail 083 549 1940

What a Champagne weather weekend. Two days of sailing weather that Durban is famous for. Saturday saw clear sky and a 10 to 18 knot Easterly breeze which got 8 Keelers and 11 Dinghies out to the start and race officer Derek Wilkes managed to get three windward leeward races in the confines of Durban harbour. Sunday dawned clear and bright and the same steady easterly breeze filled in time for the start which saw 16 Keelers and 9 Hobies participate. All together a great yachting weekend. Our thanks go to Stuart Ritchie and his crew of Crackerjack who acted as both committee boat and Race officer for the there and back race.

This Wednesday evening RNYC hosts the sunset fun race and hopefully the weather looks good as last Wednesday was miserable both from a weather and participation point of view.

This coming weekend due to the postponement of the NSRI Barrel race on the Sunday and a major dinghy weekend being held at Midmar there is no organized sailing planned. A good chance to get going on all the home jobs waiting in the cookie jar for the DIY husbands to get stuck into, so that you can get a free pass to go to the Round the Island Race at Vaal Dam the following weekend.

An early warning on the 16th/17th February RNYC hosts Memorial Weekend which will consist of two pursuit races, one in the bay on Saturday for the dinghies and one offshore on Sunday for the keelers. This weekend is not particular to any Club although hosted by RNYC, but should be shared by all who wish to remember those great sailing characters who are no longer with us and who would wish us to celebrate their respective lives and memories.

Summertime is for sailing
Don't waste it.
